Hanuman Ji lived as a close devotee of Lord Rama in the Ramayana. He is also known as the “Pawan Putra” meaning the “Son of wind”. Hanuman Ji is also associated with the epic “Mahabharata”. Hanuman Ji appears in the hindu “Rigveda”. He is reportedly also believed to be an “avatar” of Lord Shiva in “Shiv Purana”. In Southern India Hanuman Ji was believed to be incarnation of both Shiva and Vishnu. Hanuman Ji is also believed to be the origin of Lord “Ayyappa” in southern India. In ancient Odia writings Hanuman Ji is believed to be incarnation of the three Gods – Lord “Brahma” “Vishnu” And “Lord Shiva”
Hanuman Ji is remembered for being the messenger “Doot” and helper of Lord Rama in Valmiki’s Ramayana. Hanuman Ji is reportedly believed to be ardent devotee of Lord Rama in Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas 1574CE. Hanuman Ji is believed to be blessed with immense power and courage. The name of Hanuman Ji’s mother was Anjana. The name of Hanuman Ji’s father was Kesari. Hanuman Ji is also known as “Son of Wind” “Vayu” “Wind God. In his childhood, Hanuman Ji mistook the red sun as a ripe fruit and ate it. This has a reference in the opening lines of the Hanuman Chalisa.
Lord Indra granted Hanuman Ji the boon that Hanuman Ji’s body will be as strong as Lord Indra’s “Vajra”. Even Indra’s vajra would not be able to cause any harm to him. God Varuna granted Hanuman Ji, the boon that water will not be able to cause any harm to Hanuman Ji. Similarly, Lord Agni granted the boon that fire will not be able to cause any harm to Hanuman Ji. Lord Brahma granted hanuman Ji the boon that hanuman Ji can move to any place. No one will be able to stop Hanuman Ji from goinng anywhere. Lord Vishnu granted Hanuman Ji his weapon (Gada). With these boons granted, Hanuman Ji acquired unique powers.
In the Ramayana, Lord Rama arrives at Kishkinda in search of his wife Sita. Sugriva, the king of Kishkinda, had sent Hanuman Ji alongwith the bear “Jambavan”, to search for Sita, towards the southern direction. Hanuman Ji had played pranks with a sage and as a result of his curse lost his divine powers to move to any place. The group consisting of Hanuman Ji , Jambavan and others, reached the southernmost tip of India,in search of Sita. Jambavan knew that earlier Hanuman Ji’ had divine powers to move to any place. Jambavan lifted the curse given by the sage. Now Hanuman Ji could fly in the air to Lanka.
Hanuman Ji reaches lanka. With his divine powers Hanuman Ji shrinks to the size of an ant and moves inside the kingdom of Ravana. Hanuman Ji locates Sita Ji in “Ashok Vatika”. Hanuman Ji comes to his original size and conveys the message of Lord Rama to Sita Ji. Sita Ji tells Hanuman Ji that Ravan has intentions of marrying her soon. Hanuman Ji wants to take Sita Ji along with him. Sita Ji refuses and says that this work should be done by her husband, Lord Rama.
Hanuman Ji deliberately destroys Ashok Vatika and Hanuman Ji is captured by the demons. Hanuman Ji is brought to the court of Ravana. There Hanuman Ji tells Ravana that Lord Rama will come to take back Sita Ji. Ravana gives the orders that Hanuman Ji’s tail should be wrapped with an oil soaked cloth. Hanuman Ji makes his tail grow longer and longer. Ravan orders to light up the tail with fire.
Hanuman Ji shrinks in size and moves out into the city. Hanuman Ji burns entire Lanka with his burning tail. The entire city burns in flames. After this Hanuman Ji returns back.
Everyone returns to Kishkinda and Hanuman Ji tells Lord Rama that Sita Ji is safe. Lord Rama along with the support of the army of Sugriva, move towards Lanka. A fierce battle takes place between Lord Rama and Ravana. During the battle Hanuman Ji is remembered for one incident. Lakshmana, Lord Rama’s brother becomes unconcious during the battle. Lakshmana can onl be cured by a rare herb that is available only in the Himalaya mountains. Hanuman Ji has the divine powers to fly in the air. Hanuman Ji goes to the Himalaya mountains. There were many herb plants there. Hanuman Ji was not able to decide that which herb was the right one. Hanuman Ji became big like the size of a mountain. Hanuman Ji uprooted the entire mountain and carried it in his hands. Hanuman Ji reached back with the entire mountain. The herb was finally found and Lakshmana became all right.
After the battle when Lord Rama gave Hanuman Ji a gift for his support, Hanuman Ji threw it away saying that Lord Rama will always remain in his heart.Lord Rama granted Hanuman Ji the boon of immortality. Hanuman Ji will remain in existence even after the “Kalpa” or the destruction of this universe.
Hanuman Ji has a presence in the epic Mahabharata. “Bhima”, one of the “Pandava” brothers, used to boast about his powers. Hanuman Ji wanted to teach him a lesson. Hanuman Ji lay on the ground as a feeble monkey on Bhima’s way. To cross ahead Hanuman Ji told Bhima to lift his tail and move ahead. Bhima tried very hard but could not lift the tail of Hanumanji. Bhima soon realized that Hanuman Ji was a diety with divine powers. Bhima was humbled and asked Hanuman Ji to reveal himself. Hanuman Ji revealed himself to Bhima.
After this Hanuman Ji was not seen again.
