The site of the temple was a disputed land as it was believed to be the location of the Babri Masjid built between 1528 and 1529. In the year 1949 the idols of Rama and Sita were brought to the site. The Babri Masjid was demolished in the year 1992. The matter was sub judice since then. In the year 2019 the Supreme court of India by its verdict decided to give the land to the Hindus for further construction of the temple and the Muslims were given land at a nearby plave called Dhannipur in Ayodhya. The Supreme court verdict was as a result of an evidence from the Archaeological Survey of India who brought to light that there was a a Hindu structure at the site.

Temple construction at the site began with Bhumi Pujan by Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Of India on 05 Aug 2020. The temple was inaugurated on 22 Jan 2024 by means of a religious ritual (Prana Pratishta) by Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.

Construction of the temple is accompanied by a $10 billion project for construction of a new Airport, a modern railway station and development of the township. The said construction will transform Ayodhya to a global religious and tourist destination.
