Living in the society as a simple human being, Shri Sai baba was an incarnation of God. He had no desires for material things which is evident from the very simple life he lived. He never differentiated between people. He taught everyone values to live humanely in society.

The question that “When and where was Sai baba born?” does not have clear answers. There is no concrete evidence to prove Sai baba’s place and time of birth. However, it is believed that Sai Baba was born not far from the town “Shirdi”

Sai baba had a disciple named “Hemadpant”. He wrote a book name “Shri Sai SatCharita” in Marathi. This book gives most exact information about Sai Baba, as it is based on personal observation of Shri Sai baba, by “Hemadpant”

Sai Baba’s original name is also not known. The name “Sai” was given by his disciple “Mhalsapati” in Shirdi much later. It is believed that Shri Sai Baba was born with the original name “Haribhau Bhusari”.

Whenever Baba was asked about his name, place of birth, he used to give very vague answers and say that these questions were not important.

He once told “Mhalsapati” that Sai Baba was born as “Desastha Brahmin” in a village called “Pathri”. A “fakir” raised Sai baba in the early years.

On another occasion, Sai baba said that, Sai baba was handed over to a hindu guru by the fakir’s wife and he remained that guru’s disciple for 12 years.

These two major theories exist about Sai baba’s background. There is a third theory that believes in both the above: Sai baba first in early years lived with a fakir and then Sai baba was handed over to a Hindu guru.

It is said that Shri Sai Baba arrived at Shirdi when he was 16 years old. He continued to live in Shirdi for 3 years. Sai baba then disappeared for 1 year. During this period, it is believed that Sai Baba met many saints and fakirs. Baba also claimed to have fought with the army of Rani of Jhansi in the 1857 rebellion.

Baba returned permanently in 1858. This also makes us believe that year 1838 can be Sai Baba’s birth year.

He lived an ascetic life. He used to sit motionless under a neem tree in asana. Baba used to meditate.

People in the village used to be surprised to see a young lad performing such penance.
The people of the village, especially those with religious beliefs, used to be attracted towards Sai baba
“Mhalsapati” was the priest of the Khandoba Mandir. Sai baba appeared there in 1858. He called him “Sai” and gave the name “Sai”.

In those days, Baba used to live under a neem tree for five years. He used to spend long time in meditation and also used to go to the jungles for long periods.

Baba later on shifted to an old mosque. Baba used to light a holy fire in the mosque. The holy ash emerging from the fire was given to the devotees who visited him.

The place where he stayed and meet his devotees was called “Dwarkamai”.

Baba used to heal his devotees from illness with the holy ash. The holy ash used to have a magical effect on the lives of people.

Very soon Baba’s fame spread far and wide and people came to know the miracles he performed.

His devotees started growing day by day. More and more people started to visit Sai Baba to get answers to their problems.

The first Sai temple was built at Bhivpuri, Karjat in the year 1910.

Sai did not believe in human persecution based on religion or caste.

Sai used to ask his devotees to pray to God and read holy books. Baba never identified himself as a Hindu or a Muslim. He used to get very angry when he was asked to tell whether he was Hindu or Muslim.
He asked his devotees to read holy books they had faith upon. To the Muslims he asked to read the Quran and to the hindus he asked to read Ramayana or the Bhagwad Gita. Baba used to talk about the good deeds of the Hindu Gods. He used to talk about Bhagwad Gita and the Upanishads. He used to talk about Lord Rama and Lord Krishna.

With the Muslim followers Sai Baba would always talk about Allah and the Quran

In later years Parsis as well as Christians used to come to Shirdi.

The followers who came to Shirdi, saw the people of various religions together which had a deep impact on their beliefs and value systems
In his teachings Sai explained the religious text of both Hinduism and Islam. His teachings were influenced by the three Hindu spiritual paths: Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Karma Yoga

Sai also preached that everyone should donate based on one’s capability.
Sai Baba could perform many miracles like entering a state of Samādhi, lighting diya with water, taking out his body organs and then placing them back to their place, giving life to a very sick person.

People used to see him in their dreams. He used to solve their problems by coming in their dreams and giving advice.

Sai left the mortal body in Oct 1918. Sai continued to attend to his devotees till the very end. His remains are kept at Shirdi. The place is known today as Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple.

The Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is visited daily by a large number of devotees. The number of devotees range from 30,000 to more than 100,000 per day.

Those traditions are still followed in the Sai temple today which are being followed when Sai Baba was alive.
Four Aaartis are held daily. They are
Kakad Aarti (Morning) 4:30 am, Madhyan Aarti (Afternoon) 12:00 pm, Dhup Aarti (Evening) 6:30 pm, Shej Aarti (Night) at 10:30pm

Assurances made by Sai Baba to his devotees:

  • Whosoever puts their feet on Shirdi soil, their sufferings will come to an end.
  • The wretched and miserable will rise to joy and happiness as soon as they climb the steps of my Samadhi.
  • I shall be ever active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly body.
